What peace there is here... The house is on the edge of a forest. You meet only a few walkers. You can listen to the beautiful birds singing. In summer we spend a lot of time in this idyllic part of our beautiful Slovenia. The Kolpa River flows nearby, where we spend most of the summer time swimming and cooling off, walking on the nearby hills and relaxing without the hustle and bustle of the city that we are used to.
It used to be my stepfather's parents' cottage. Years ago, there was a large vineyard next to the cottage, which they took care of for many years. They produced wine from grapes and cider from apples.
We started renovating the cottage a few years ago, so it now serves as a weekend retreat. We have not had a vineyard for a long time. Around the house we have planted many trees, blackberry bushes, blueberry bushes, various herbs and even a small garden where we grow some vegetables. It's a real paradise on earth, where we love to go after a hard day's work.
Around the house, we have exhibited some of the old objects used by our ancestors to make wine.
Visitors always enjoy looking at the objects. We have an old wine press where grapes used to be pressed, an antique wagon that was mainly used for harvesting wood, a 400 litre wooden tub in which grapes were soaked, an old plough that was used to plough the fields with an ox or a horse... We have integrated these old objects beautifully into the surroundings of our house. This is how the modern meets the antique, and this is what we all love. The memories of our ancestors thus remain with us.
Cultural heritage represents the history of our ancestors and is a rich source of information about how they used to work and live. Let us be proud of our cultural heritage, and let us preserve the memory of our predecessors and pay tribute to them.
Every family has its own story. Let it not be forgotten. Let us preserve it.
