These are the basic rules of conduct in Slovenia. They are a signpost for how to live, how to distinguish between right and wrong. They are a pillar of belonging and an indicator of what defines the people of the Republic of Slovenia. Adherence to the fundamental values is the basis for an individual to assume a leadership position.

The values were endorsed by a decision of the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia at a development conference on 12 September 2024:

"In order to ensure sustainable development and the well-being of citizens, it is essential to act in accordance with the fundamental values defined by Slovenian society: respect and trust, honesty, mutual assistance, belonging and moderation."
