1. Activity title: Festival of Differences
2. Target group
- Pupils in years 1-5 of primary school (adaptable for pre-school).
- Estimated duration: 1 to 2 school hours
3. Form of work
Classroom work, individual work, group activity, discussion
4. Didactic starting points
The activity is based on understanding and respecting differences between people – how each individual contributes to the community with their uniqueness. The emphasis is on tolerance, acceptance of different characteristics, habits, and talents that enrich the group.
5. Learning objectives
- to recognise that differences between people are values that enrich the community
- develop empathy and understanding for others
- To experience a sense of belonging despite differences
- to promote cooperation and inclusion of all group members
- Recognise the unique qualities of each pupil
6. Accessories
- Sketch sheet
- barvice/flomastri/tempere
7. Course of Activities
The teacher reads the ninth page and leads a discussion of what was read.
Interview questions
- What does it mean for each villager to be unique, yet indispensable?
- What are your special talents that you can contribute to the group?
8. Art activity: Portraits of talented individuals
Objective Visually display that we are all different, but we respect these differences. Each of us contributes something important to the community.
Flow:
- Each pupil draws their self-portrait and around it their talents (a football, an instrument, etc.).
- Perhaps we can look at them together and use them to highlight the importance of the fact that we are all different, yet all equally important.
- Option: everyone presents their talents to their classmates.
9. Physical Activity: Dancing
Objective Illustrate diversity and uniqueness, and the importance of cooperation.
Accessories
- various music (fast, slow, cheerful…)
Flow:
- The pupils position themselves around the room.
- Each student expresses their uniqueness through a gesture or a dance they invent themselves.
- Together, they create a “celebration of differences” – everyone dances at the same time, harmoniously or in a mixed fashion, resulting in a collective performance of uniqueness.
- When the music changes, they immerse themselves in different sounds and adapt their movements.
- Possibility: the game can be upgraded so that each person demonstrates one move, and the others repeat it, or they can create a joint dance composed of one move from each student, which they then learn together.
10. Conclusion and reflection
Final thought: »We are all different, and that is our richness.«
Let's talk about what the world would be like if we were all the same, and what our class would be like if we were all the same – with the same talents, desires, thoughts... We can link this to how we feel a sense of belonging to our community, but also respect and value differences.
