1. Activity title: Mountain of moderation
2. Target group
- Pupils in years 1-5 of primary school (adaptable for pre-school).
- Estimated duration: 1 to 2 school hours
3. Form of work
Classroom work, individual work, group activity, discussion
4. Didactic starting points
The activity is based on understanding the value of moderation and cooperation. Pupils learn that success is achievable when we look after ourselves and others, and when we help each other instead of competing. The emphasis is on empathy, balance and teamwork.
5. Learning objectives
- to recognise the meaning of moderation
- develop cooperation and mutual assistance
- to find a balance between caring for yourself and others
- to strengthen the sense of belonging and trust within the group
- recognise the value of collective achievement
6. Accessories
- flomaster
- leaves
- Glue
7. Course of Activities
The teacher reads the tenth page and leads a discussion about what has been read.
Interview questions
- What does moderation mean? – we help with examples that are close to it: we like playing games, but we know we can't dedicate all our time to it, but also to school, playing outside, helping at home…
- How can we help others without comparing or competing?
- Can we really all be winners? How?
8. Art activity: Mountain of Moderation
Objective To develop an awareness of the importance of moderation and to visually represent it.
Flow:
- Each pupil draws (and writes) on a piece of paper where they would need more moderation (in playing games, watching television, sweets, etc.).
- We'll stick the tickets to the wall/poster in the shape of a mountain.
- Option: each learner presents where they could be more moderate and their reflection on how they will achieve this. Classmates can offer advice.
9. Physical activity: Moderation polygon
Objective To illustrate cooperation, balance and care for others.
Accessories
- blisters
- rocking horse
- hoops
- balls
Flow:
- Using various equipment, we will set up a polygon that includes different obstacles and modes of movement (jumping, crawling, balancing, etc.).
- We divide the pupils into pairs.
- Each pair must overcome the polygon together – they must find a balance between looking after themselves and their classmate.
- Upgrade option: groups can be increased, first pairs, then threes, fours…
- Important: this is not a competition. The goal is for everyone to succeed.
10. Conclusion and reflection
Final thought: »I can shine without overshadowing others. I can take care of myself and others too.«
Let's talk about why it's important to seek balance and moderation in everything, why we need to know how to look after ourselves, but also others, why it's important not to overdo anything. We can connect this conversation to real issues we observe in students.
