She loves to play, sing or play with him, and especially loves the days when they can go for a walk together in sunny weather. She and her family live in a quiet corner of the village by the Krka River.
One November afternoon, we were greeted with pleasant sunshine, warmth and beautiful autumn colours. It was one of those days that just cry out to be made the most of. So Peter decided to take his son for a long walk through their village and then into the next village. This will give him a chance to chat with his neighbours, who will in turn be delighted and play with his son, who - especially among children - is extremely popular.
As they walked along the village road, observing nature and village life, Peter noticed something strange near one of the houses. In front of the house was a black plastic crate, neatly stacked with local fruit - kaki. On the box was a handwritten note: Free fruit. It's edible khaki from our garden, a sweetness we share. Take your autumn gift!
Even though Peter wears glasses, he knew he was seeing right. Such a heartfelt gesture took his breath away and he felt a lump in his throat. He was deeply moved by the message he read, before he had even thought of serving himself fruit. He had never experienced anything so generous. He took the fruit with sincere gratitude, but unfortunately there was no one in the house to whom he could personally thank for this beautiful act. It is difficult to put such moments into words, but at that moment he knew that he could small acts of kindness warm the heart and brighten the day.
When I heard about this act, I was touched and my mind took me back to the time when I was travelling in Spain. There, gestures like this, where you are surprised by a small stall selling food and drink, for example, during a long walk, are quite common. I have always perceived such acts as silent gifts from strangers. It was in moments like these that I felt even more deeply that they were simple acts of kindness are the best lesson in human kindness and that the heart is often stronger than words.
Because this event happened near me, I can feel all these feelings again and write about them. Honesty, trust and respect for our fellow human beings are values that should guide us all.
