It is then that we understand that what counts most is mutual help, compassion and the willingness to help our fellow human beings when they need it.
In August 2023, Slovenia was hit by a major natural disaster - flooding. It destroyed many people's homes and changed their lives. We were just returning from our holiday when we followed what was happening on social media: pictures of the devastation, videos and stories of people in need. In the car behind me, my daughter Leja sat quietly listening to the reports. After a few moments, she asked me: »Mum, how can we help these people?«
I was touched by her question. I was also proud of my daughter. We started thinking about what we could do. We remembered that we both like to bake. And so an idea was born; we would bake cookies and offer them to people in exchange for a voluntary contribution, with the money from the sale going to one of the families affected by the floods.
People quickly welcomed our idea with open arms. Many of them wanted to help, so they were happy to buy our biscuits and scones. We worked hard all week baking, packing and delivering the biscuits, meeting lots of friendly and warm people.
In the end, we raised around 650 euros, which we donated to a family in need. It was hard work - especially with work and other daily commitments - but our hearts were full of happiness and gratitude.
It was then that Lea and I realised once again that that even small acts, done with a lot of love, can bring much good and beauty, and that together we can do more. When we help each other, share the good and stand by each other, the world becomes a better place..
