Maja and Franci Šušteršič are husband and wife, both volunteering with the Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Franci is a supportive member who likes to participate in bowling or other sports activities and outings, for example, while Maja likes to participate in more than just leisure activities. She has been active in the association since 2012.

Maja explains that she was fascinated by sign language when she was still in full-time employment, because she always wanted to help deaf people in some way, but didn't know how. She is a firm believer in returning good for good, so as soon as she joined the Association she started learning basic sign language, which has helped her in her job.

Even now that she is retired, Maja goes out with the President of the Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Mr Boris Horvat, to help hearing aid users in nursing homes. When they are called, they are always happy to answer.

"They call because they want someone to change the tube on their hearing aid or the battery. Sometimes we just advise them which specialist they can contact. Unfortunately, some elderly people can't even change the battery themselves."

So the care worker at the nursing home calls them when there are about ten hearing aids available for repair. That's when Maja and Boris volunteer to help. "It's a small thing for us, but it means a lot to someone who needs help."

They are always welcomed in a room where chairs are ready and users are usually already queuing. They always take at least two to three hours to chat with everyone. They have a coffee together and laugh at one of the stories. Last time, a gentleman wanted to show them his room. It was a great pleasure to show him how nicely decorated it was and to tell them how happy he is there now. In between, of course, they chatted with passers-by. Days like this have a special charm.

A social worker sometimes escorts them to the residents who are immobile. "You know what a joy it is when you return a repaired appliance to someone and they can hear again. When you see that glow in their eyes... That's what we're here for. To be able to help those people who need it."

Once a year, as a thank you, all the volunteers who help at the home are invited to a party, where they are also given some nice gifts.

"Good comes back with good," says Maja. It's true. It takes so little to brighten someone's day. Just a kind word, a warm smile, a handshake means a lot. It's a sign of respect. It's lending a hand to those in need. Let's spread joy, positivity and good deeds.
