Slovenia is not just a destination for him. It is something more. It is something more.
Glenn's grandmother was Slovenian. As a young boy, Glenn listened to her stories about Slovenia with open eyes and drew in his mind the country he knew he would visit one day. When he grew up, he decided to find that country - and he has returned every year since.
Whenever he comes on holiday, we explore the hidden corners of our beautiful Slovenia together; from Bohinj to the Kolpa river. He is always fascinated by the beauty of our country. Last year, we invited him to our weekend in Bela Krajina. He came for a whole week, so he could see this beautiful region of ours in peace.
Our weekend house is located on top of a hill among the vineyards between Črnomelj and Vinica. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city and in harmony with unspoilt nature. The first time we went to the Kolpa River in Damlj, Glenn couldn't help but marvel at the beautiful surroundings we live in.
"It's the most beautiful place in the world," he said many times. And that's saying something, because Glenn has travelled almost all over the world. In the peaceful shelter of the Kolpa River, in the changing colours of the trees and the gurgling of the water, he found what he described as a feeling of familiarity, of relaxation. We sat together on the banks of the river, swam a lot and listened to his stories of his travels; of cities that glittered but lacked the warmth he found here in the simplicity of nature and the friendliness of the people. In the evenings he also told us about Belgium; about his city, the food, the customs and how people live there.
She is always happy to learn a new Slovenian word. He pronounces our phrases such as "good morning", "thank you" and "it's nice to be here" with special respect. During his visit, we practised our English so that we could chat and laugh with him in a relaxed way. We learned from each other - not only languages, but also openness, patience and cordiality.
Of course, we also gave him a few gifts on his departure, including our Slovenian wine. "I'll open this the day I miss Slovenia," he replied.
It is always hard to say goodbye to each other, but we know that he will be back, because Slovenia is not just a beautiful country for him, but a piece of his story, his roots. Glenn carries Slovenia in his heart, and we carry him - as a friend and as a bridge between two countries connected by stories, memories and beautiful deeds.
