The world of children with special needs is a world of difference, courage and immense human warmth. It can be a gift that teaches us to look at the world with an open heart.
I spoke to Sandra Mušič from Cerkelj, whose life has brought her many trials, many of them very difficult.
When she was a young girl, she experienced one of the biggest challenges of her life - the birth of her son with special needs. Her days were filled with medical appointments, worries, endless unanswered questions and feelings of helplessness. Despite her love for her son, she felt that this was a mentally difficult ordeal. Although outwardly she looked strong, inside she often did not feel so.
We talked about facing the challenges of parenthood. Sandra did not retreat into herself, but decided to find a way to understand herself, the situation and her child. She started to research and try different methods. She attended alternative workshops and therapies that helped her to stay strong for herself and her family.
He believes that no one should have to walk the hard path alone."It is important to be able to listen without judgement and to lend a shoulder when someone shows their vulnerability."
The last time she met a woman at school, she was visibly tired, and when she picked up her daughter, she had an emotional breakdown. Sandra watched what was happening, but later she went up to the girl, looked into her eyes and started to gently massage her hands, which made her relax completely. As a result, she and her mother were able to re-establish contact. Tears came to the mother's eyes, and in the afternoon she sent Sandra a message: "Thank you for the gentle massage and compassion that made my daughter feel completely calm this afternoon. You really helped me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart." Sandra replied. When hearts meet in compassion, even the heaviest burden becomes lighter."
We then went on to talk about that it is in vulnerability that strength lies and that we are here to help each other.
The challenges she has faced have made it easier for her today to advise others on how they can ease their difficult moments. Parents of children attending the same school as her son often ask her for advice. "We all face similar challenges, which makes it all the more important to share our opinions, to support each other, to acknowledge the difficulties we face, and to help each other with concrete advice, encouragement and the knowledge that we are not alone."
Parents of children with special needs often understand each other's hardships, worries and small victories best. That's why helping each other is an important value that builds their everyday lives.
