Volunteering is one of the most beautiful forms of solidarity. It means giving something of yourself - your time, your energy, your knowledge, your warmth - without expecting anything in return.

It is a path walked by people with a heart, empathetic people who are always ready to help. One of them is Mrs Nadja Žura.

Nadja grew up in the countryside in a big family. Her parents taught their children that life is not only about survival, but also about coexistence; with neighbours, nature and, above all, with each other. From an early age, she was taught respect, love for her neighbour and to help her fellow human beings. Even as a little girl, she loved to help the elderly in the village; she would fetch medicines from the pharmacy, bring groceries from the grocery store, and help to clean the houses and tidy up the surroundings. This is where she found her mission.

She wanted to become a nurse because she thought it was the most beautiful profession, because you can help people, relieve their pain and be there for them. But unfortunately, her dream did not come true. She ended up in textiles, a profession that was not her first choice, but one that she also pursued with dedication. Her studies led her to the city. She loved helping her classmates with their studies. She was with the Scouts, where volunteering is part of everyday life. She visited old people's homes with them, and together they collected food and clothing for families in need...

Soon after arriving in the city, she started a family. She and her husband were willing to take on any job to make ends meet. Nadja soon retrained as a caregiver for the elderly. This decision changed her outlook on life. "When I saw the glow in the eyes of the people I helped, I knew that this was my life's mission." Caring for the elderly gave her a new impetus and a new strength.

Unfortunately, she was soon faced with a serious life test - illness. She has been battling cancer for 26 years. Yet she remains positive. She says it is love and respect for her fellow human beings that gives her the strength to get out of bed every morning.

Today, Nadja is retired and volunteers in her hometown. She helps others with warmth and compassion. She also visits people in the nursing home and spreads a positive spirit wherever she goes. "When I see those smiling faces, the sparkle in their eyes, when I receive or give a warm hug, that's when I know I'm on the right track. On the path of hope for a better world," she says with her warm smile and a look full of life's wisdom.

As a volunteer, she has found again the strength that drives her forward. Despite all the trials, her life has a deep meaning. Volunteering is not only helping others, it is also a gift to oneself. It teaches you patience, compassion and gratitude. When you help, you grow.
