We went for a walk in the hilly countryside around Celje and enjoyed the view of the budding nature. When we arrived at my father-in-law's acquaintances, they surprised me with their hospitality and kindness.
»We're all neighbours here. It's rare that you wouldn't be offered something by the houses next door and in the surrounding area,« said brother-in-law Matej. I also know that neighbours like to help each other out, which I particularly like.
A storm was forecast for the late afternoon, so we decided it would be better to press on quickly and make the most of the day. After a few minutes, we arrived at an interesting stop with a lake where people can fish. Slavko Štarkl and his wife live there. Slavko – despite being in his golden years – is full of a vitality that many a young man would envy. His hard work and zeal probably contribute to his virtue, and he also enjoys visiting the Slovenian mountains, to which he feels a special connection.
From afar, we could see Slavko working around the house. As we approached him, he stopped us and said: »Where are you off to in such a hurry? You'll at least stop for a bit and have something refreshing to drink. It's a really hot day today.« Before any of us could object, he had already seated us on a bench and asked his wife to bring drinks.
During a pleasant chat, we exchanged a few stories. Slavko suddenly looked at my sister and remembered how he had rescued her from trouble in winter when her car got stuck on a snowy road. »It was snowing heavily then, but luckily I was able to help you get home safely,« he recalled.
His sister was grateful for his help. Remembering the event, she added: »That day I really wished my car had four-wheel drive.« Slavko, with his characteristic sense of humour, remarked: »No problem. As long as I can, I'll gladly help girls like you.«
After a pleasant conversation, full of laughter and interesting anecdotes, we slowly bid farewell to Slavko and moved on; partly along the usual path and partly by a shortcut, because the sounds in the distance were already reminding us of the approaching storm. It couldn't spoil our pleasant day. We were accompanied by the good feeling of how wonderful it is to know a person who is willing to help and on whom you can rely.
