Vesna Smrtnik from Sinje Gorica near Vrhnika is a woman who has always been able to listen to people.

Her warmth, sparkling temperament and sincere heart made her special. She was the kind of person you could trust and the kind of person who always found time to help. Her life was full of laughter and positive energy, but also of concern for others. That is how she was brought up.

Last year, something happened that shook Vesna deeply. Her (childhood) friend Ana, with whom she and Vesna had many adventures together, was in dire straits. Suddenly, she was without a job. A single mother with two school-age children, no savings, with bills piling up. Inflation was pushing up prices, every item was becoming more expensive, and she sat helplessly at the kitchen table in the evenings, wondering how she was going to manage.

It didn't take Vesna long to make her decision. She remembered all those years when she and Anna used to run together in the meadows, hide in the woods and dream of the future. She remembered how they shared everything - from the last lollipop to childhood secrets. Now that Anna was in trouble, she knew she had to do something.

She went to the bookshop and started filling her shopping basket. Notebooks, crayons, pencils, pens, rulers, glue sticks - everything the two children needed. When she saw the school bags, she thought how much the little ones would love new ones and added them to her basket without a second thought.

When she got to Anna's house, she knocked and handed over the shopping bags with a big smile. Anna stood still. At first she just watched, silent, and then tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Vesna... I can't accept this... It's too much," she whispered in a shaky voice.

Vesna took her hand and squeezed it. "Don't talk nonsense. Children should have everything they need. It's not a favour, it's friendship."

Anna rushed into his arms, tears flowing, but gratitude shining in her eyes.

A few days later, Vesna was surprised on her doorstep. A big basket full of homemade cheese, cottage cheese and fresh vegetables from Anna's garden. On the top was a small slip of paper that read: "Gratitude knows no price."

Vesna read the message with a smile and a feeling of warmth washed over her. Her grandmother always said: "Kindness always comes back. What you give from the heart, one day it comes back to you in the most beautiful form."

And Vesna knew that this was very true.
