Mateja Lanjšček works with children and adolescents with special needs at the Vipava Education, Rehabilitation and Training Centre.

She is currently on maternity leave and walks every day with her pram around the city, or at least down the next street. A few days ago, she noticed an elderly lady in the parking lot of a block of flats, struggling to carry shopping bags out of her car. Mateja immediately went up to her and offered to help.

"When I asked her where she intended to take such heavy bags, she told me to the fifth floor of the apartment block. I couldn't believe that she had even thought about doing it all herself, because it was a lot of stuff," said Mateja.

She helped an elderly lady immediately, without any recovery. She grabbed some bags and carried them to the fifth floor. She had to repeat the process three times, during which time the lady took care of the baby in the pram.

"Just because she loaded it all in and out of the car herself, I advised her to take someone else with her next time she makes a big purchase like that, to help her from trying too hard. She took pity on me," added Mateja, who is also known for always being willing to help anyone.

Why did you decide to come to the lady's aid, even though you had enough to worry about with your baby, I asked Matej.

"You never know when you will need help yourself. Whether it's carrying bags from the grocery store or something else. I could get hurt today or tomorrow and it will be very useful to have someone to help me. If not before, then when I'm older and can't do everything myself. It is very easy to help in these situations, because it doesn't cost me more than five minutes of my time," she replied.

The lady was very happy to help and couldn't thank Matej enough. Probably many people would have walked past at that moment and not paid attention to what the lady was doing.

"I will do my best to raise my daughter to be a person who will not find it difficult to offer help to a fellow human being in need, no matter how great or small. I would very much like to see as many people as possible thinking in this way. Children are watching us, watching our actions and learning a lot from them." concluded Mateja.
