"A few years ago I was in a shop. I was standing at the checkout, putting things on the conveyor belt, when I noticed that the guy standing in front of me was a classmate of my son's from primary school. He was still small, but I recognised him immediately. I greeted him kindly and spoke to him. I asked him how he was and how he was doing at school.
He happily replied that he was doing great at school and that today was a special day - it was his mum's birthday! He said that he had come to the shop to buy her something nice for a present with the money he had saved. I was really touched. I thought it was so nice and sincere that he wanted to make his mother happy with his change.
When it was his turn, the cashier started scanning the products and told him the final amount. The boy diligently counted his money, but it quickly became clear that he didn't have enough. A little confused and sad, he was reaching for one item to return it when I stopped him. I asked the cashier how much he was still missing and, without thinking, added the missing amount.
At that moment, his eyes really lit up. He was overjoyed and I think he thanked me at least ten times. With a big smile and a present in his hand, he trotted off towards home - proud to be able to give his mother a present that he had chosen and (almost entirely) paid for himself.
I was happy that day too. With one small gesture I could brighten someone's day. And not just him - a few days later, I received a message from his mother. She wrote to thank me for helping her son. Her words warmed my heart even more."
Sometimes it really doesn't take much to brighten someone's moment - one kind look and a little attention can create a memory that lasts forever.
