A beautiful autumn day at the homestead in Kraščih, Goričko. The heady scents of nature's ripe fruits spread through the surroundings.

But it's not just the sweet smell of ripe fruit that wafts from the farmhouse kitchen, where a group of school children are preparing to arrive and spend the next few days on the farm, surrounded by nature. Marjetka and Sabina's hands have created savoury and sweet treats for them.

In the early afternoon, the farm was bustling with children curiously roaming around and exploring the farm. They looked at the farm buildings and the machinery, but it was the farm animals that fascinated them the most. From the very first day, they enthusiastically expressed their desire to help with farm chores and feeding the animals. Sisters Marjetka and Sabina were of course very happy to do so, because any help is very useful.

So after a snack and a short rest, the children went to work. First they enthusiastically started picking apples and pears, and then the farmer brought them pumpkins from the field, from which they picked seeds to use for pressing pumpkin seed oil.

»The children did all the work with enthusiasm and playfulness,« says Sabina, »which was wonderful to watch.« All the while, she was watching a tiny, more quiet and reserved girl who stood out a little from the rest of the children, who were quite loud and lively.

As agreed, the children ran to the chicken coop early the next morning and fed the chickens and ducks with cereals. The timid little girl was again in the background. »I kept thinking how I could help her get rid of her reticence,« says Sabina. »She reminded me of myself, because I was like that as a child, and I thought what would help me in those moments.«

She walked up to her, asked her name and asked if she could help her carry the basket to the barn where the pigs would be fed. She looked at her a little timidly, but immediately went with her. »I showed her the pig in the barn, and it was a real pig. cartwriter. She stroked him and smiled as he turned his head left and right in pleasure. For the first time I saw a girl more relaxed and with a smile on her face.«

The other children, accompanied by their teachers, followed and together they fed the pigs and sheep, while Marjetka prepared a delicious breakfast. They did various activities during the day and in the evening they collected eggs from their nests. They took them to the kitchen, where Marjetka prepared the egg dishes they wanted.

The next day was spent exploring the surrounding area, visiting a nearby lake and baking apple strudel in the afternoon. There was a lot of enthusiasm during the preparation and a real children's cookery party in the kitchen.

»The shy girl was still more calm and in the background, so I invited her to help me season and wrap the strudel«, Sabina continues. »I noticed her eyes sparkled and she bravely helped me finish the strudel.«

It was the last day of the children's stay at the farm and they were helping to feed the animals as they do every morning. In the early afternoon, they had their last lunch. »We prepared sweet presents for the children to thank them for their help,« says Sabina.

»When I came into the dining room with the gifts to say a few words of thanks to the children, I had a touching surprise that I will never forget. A shy little girl came running up to me and hugged me so tightly and lovingly that I forgot all my words of thanks and tears came instead. When all the other girls came running into my arms after her, the tears flowed and flowed.«

They were not tears of sadness, but tears of joy, of emotion and of the realisation that when we allow ourselves to look with an open heart, we can see what we would not otherwise see, and we can give greatness to someone who may not have been able to discover it in themselves.
