Students who develop these two values find it easier to establish quality interpersonal relationships, better understand themselves and others, and contribute to a safer and more inclusive school and wider social environment.
The aim of such education for students is to develop a culture of respect, cooperation, empathy and tolerance, prevent various forms of violence, strengthen the sense of safety and belonging within the school community, and raise awareness about the importance of compassion. In addition, in this way, we offer them tools for non-violent conflict resolution, encourage the development of responsibility for their own behaviour, and foster positive relationships with others.
The Secondary School of Construction, Woodworking and Early Childhood Education at the Novo mesto School Centre is a school with a big heart. The purpose of the initiative School with heart This school year, it connects pupils, teachers and other professional staff in many volunteer, charity and humanitarian activities based on solidarity, intergenerational cooperation and caring for fellow human beings.
The initiative encourages students to be active, responsible, and compassionate citizens. It includes various activities such as visiting retirement homes, collecting aid for the socially vulnerable, creating crafts for children and the elderly, organising workshops and performances for the youngest, and participating in nationwide charity drives and blood donation activities. Teachers play a key role in this, providing support to students, creating a stimulating and safe environment, and offering them opportunities to realise their ideas.
The main objective of the project is not the amount of funds raised, but the positive impact on youth development; more empathy, compassion and cooperation, and less violence. The initiative is based on experiential learning, as young people develop social skills most easily through concrete experiences, relationships and active participation, which helps them develop into responsible and compassionate adults. Everyone can contribute to the best of their abilities and become an active part of a compassionate society.
To the project School with heart We are particularly proud of this, as we received the honorary title of Best Volunteer Project 2024 for it in 2025.
