Velika Sela is a small village in Bela Krajina. It is located in the municipality of Črnomelj, on a small and sunny hill above Adlešiči.

It is home to around 20 people, who are mainly engaged in agriculture and beekeeping. Two famous Slovenian artists have also found peace in this village. And this time, it is about these warm-hearted people.

The people of Selc form a community in the true sense of the word. They come together on all major festivals. They watch all major sporting events together and celebrate and toast when one of them celebrates a birthday. They visit each other regularly; once they go to visit one another. They live together and help each other - with each other and for each other. They even have their own village anthem, which they like to sing. The lyrics go something like this:

»The mountain is turning green,

the mountain is turning green.

They graze on it,

grazed on

Red deer ...«

(transcript taken from Boris Grabrian)

The Selski Jeleni, as they call themselves, preserve local traditions and enjoy local, Belokranj cuisine. Roast, cake and good a heap of wine are always on the table. They like to organise trips together or visit a Christmas market. In short, they are never bored. In this village, you can really feel the people's belonging to the place where they live.

They often come together and do their best to keep their Sela a beautiful and well-kept village. They have also created a meeting place and recently restored the village chapel. It was quite a big project, but with a lot of goodwill and hard work, they have successfully completed it. The chapel was restored with their own funds and the work was done by all the villagers. Once the chapel was restored, a grand opening ceremony was organised and the wider community was invited to attend.

Boris Grabrijan, an expert on agriculture, customs and the history of the area, keeps a diligent record of all events in and around the village. In Veliki Sely, his son Izidor and his partner Manka run the Vučji ogrizek organic farm, where they breed, among many other animals, an indigenous breed of sheep - the Belokranjska pramenka.

Irena and Jože, who enjoy folk dancing and proudly perform at numerous events in the typical white folk costume of Belokranj, also show their adherence to the Belokranj tradition. Selčan Peter is a beekeeper and produces excellent honey, which the hard-working bees collect in the unspoilt surrounding countryside.

The love of animals among the Selčans is also demonstrated by Vesna and Boris, who enjoy their dog, their many ducks and their chickens, which they take care of with devotion. Maja and Jernej like to have fun and run the café Selas locas, which offers pleasant refreshment during the summer months.

The people of Selčani agree that their Alenka bakes the best desserts far and wide. Damjan and Helena have started a family in Seli and their two girls are the youngest residents of the village. Joni, an academic painter who, together with her husband Vlad, appreciates the peace that this small village offers, found inspiration in the unspoilt surrounding nature.

It is good to know that there are still places where people are connected, working together and looking out for each other. You could say that in Veliki Selo, belonging is alive. The people of Sele Velile wholeheartedly show their loyalty to the place where they have lived for centuries, and to each other - one neighbour to another, shoulder to shoulder. The people of Velké Meles know that they can rely on each other and that their village, of which they are justly proud, will continue to live and breathe with them.
