The year was 2020 and on my daughter's birthday, 12 March, the epidemic of covida-19 was declared.

Measures have been taken to contain it, and we have been forced to spend most of our time at home. It has not been easy. For anyone. And especially not for the young people who had to stay in their homes. Socialising moved to the internet. Phones became our best friends or the means to keep in touch with friends. Some of us feared more and others less for our health and the health of our neighbours. The world we knew not long ago changed overnight. We were frantically following the news about what we could and could not do. Unfortunately, stress has become our daily companion. It even got to the point where we could only move around in our home municipalities.

So my daughter could only celebrate her 17th birthday with us, her family. No friends, no fun. That day, my mother and brother went for a walk on a nearby hill. As they were coming back, they saw a little crying kitten among the trees, which someone had obviously left behind. His eyes were sore and he was completely malnourished. It immediately struck Mum that her granddaughter had expressed her wish to have a pet many times. The kitten approached them and cried loudly. They took him downstairs as he took pity on them with his loud meowing. They decided to take him home with them.

What a joy that was. We immediately prepared blankets and bowls and found wool and balls to play with. The kitten was scared, thirsty and hungry, of course, but he quickly got used to us. Later, even when we were out, he never moved away from us.

It was by far the best birthday present my daughter has ever received. In the following days, of course, we bought everything we needed to make the kitten feel as comfortable as possible. Soon we took him to the vet. She was a female. We named her Kimi and spayed her. She became a member of our family. Her health improved rapidly and she became more and more lively.

For Kimi, being alone in the woods with other animals preying on her could have been fatal, or she could have starved to death. Luckily, she was found in time.

She is now safe and warm, and most importantly - very loved. She has been brightening our days with her kindness and mischievousness for quite a few years now. She sits soothingly in everyone's arms and puts a smile on our faces. She has brought much joy and love to our home. We are grateful for her and hope she will stay with us for a long time.
