Aljaž was not just a programmer. His eyes always shone when he talked about programming - not as a job, but as a passion that filled his days and nights.
At the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he worked as an assistant professor, he was a mentor and an inspiration - someone who believed in his students, even when they doubted themselves and their abilities. Marko, his most stubborn student, was one of those who struggled with every line of code until they almost gave up. "This isn't for me," he once muttered in despair during a tutorial when the software failed for the tenth time.
But Aljaž saw more in him than Marko saw in himself. He sat down with him, explained the problem in a way he could understand - with metaphors from everyday life. "Programming is not a fight", he told him, "it is a dialogue between you and the computer. Listen to what it is saying to you." And so they began to break down the code together, line by line, until Mark's programme ran perfectly for the first time.
The moment he saw the result on the screen was almost unreal. At first Marko just stared, then burst out laughing. "I can't believe it!" he exclaimed. Aljaž just smiled and tapped his knuckles lightly on the table. "I always knew you could do it," he told him. Later, when Marko got a nine in the exam, he sent him a message. Thank you, Aljaž. I would have given up without you."
Aljaž was the mentor who not only taught algorithms and data structures, but also instilled confidence, perseverance and a love of programming in his students. When he talks about his projects today, there is not only knowledge in his voice, but also a sparkle, that rare combination of professionalism and genuine dedication.
When I meet him, he is always talking about something new - about the progress of artificial intelligence, the challenges he is solving, or the students he is still encouraging even though he has changed jobs. His energy is infectious, his optimism unwavering. Aljaž is not just a programmer. He is a teacher, a visionary and someone who changes the world, but - one line of code at a time.
