It's not easy being in a new place where you don't know anyone. When I moved here, I felt an immense mixture of hope and fear, every corner of the landscape hiding the unknown and every face an unfamiliar smile...

Everything was easy as long as I was healthy and had my own transport. Then I believed that I could overcome any obstacle that came my way.

But life has a way of surprising us. Suddenly, the person I was living with became immobile. On top of that, I took over the care of another person who was left helpless at the other end of our country, relying solely on me. The days I used to spend picking plants in the garden and in the nearby meadows have turned into a constant frenzy of tiredness, worry and a feeling of helplessness. When my car broke down and my only means of transport to the shop 20 km away, up or down a steep hill and sharp bends, the world went dark.

In these darkest moments, it seemed that all options had been exhausted. But somewhere deep inside me, a hope was sprouting, an invisible seed that brought sudden happiness. And it was that happiness that came in the form of a good neighbour I had never known would become my angel. When she saw that I couldn't come to the shop, she didn't hesitate to offer me a lift. Every visit, even when she brought me vegetables and freshly picked mushrooms from the forest, was like a touch of sunshine that broke through the clouds of my hard daily life.

Every time we travelled together, I felt that I was no longer alone. When I asked her why she was always willing to help, she replied simply: "Because that's who I am - I like to help." With those words, my heart opened and I realised that there is power in sincere, selfless kindness.

Our friendship has deepened over time. When she needed help with technical matters that she did not know how to handle, I was happy to help without asking for anything in return. From time to time, I gave her small, carefully chosen gifts to brighten her day, and I was rewarded by her sincere smile. Every moment was proof that honesty and selfless help are the greatest gifts we can give to each other.

But before I met this true friend, I had already had the painful experience of insincere help. Someone had offered me a hand only to expect something in return - something that deeply wounded my trust. This experience taught me the importance of instilling respect, honesty and generosity from an early age. And it is these values that today protect me from the darkness of selfishness that can overshadow the beauty of true human bonds.

Every one of us finds ourselves at a crossroads where there seems to be no way out. But in those moments, unexpected happiness can bring into our lives those people who are willing to share their warmth, trust and love sincerely, without expectation of reciprocation. My good neighbour Darinka showed me that real help comes from the heart - without expectations and without conditions. Her selflessness taught me that in a world where obstacles are inevitable, there is always room for honesty, for trust and for genuine human warmth. And it is this bond, based on honesty, that makes us truly human.
