He explained why: »When I go for walks in nature, I'm very bothered by the rubbish that, one way or another, ends up in the environment. I decided not to wait for others, so I'll take care of changing things for the better myself.« This creates something good for our area and heritage, as well as for the beauty of our country, society, and future generations. In this way, we also set an example and have the opportunity to learn from our fellow human beings.
Initiative Bag a day It encourages people to actively contribute to a cleaner environment. It is based on the simple idea that individuals pick up one bag of rubbish during a walk or other activities. However, the aim is not only to collect trash from nature but also to raise awareness about the importance of responsible environmental behaviour and to encourage others to do the same.
Nejc observes that there are still a lot of rubbish by the roadsides, paths and in nature in Slovenia. Among the most common rubbish are plastic bottles, cans, cigarette butts and various packaging. The campaign has also spread to other municipalities, where people increasingly recognise the importance of caring for the environment.
As part of the initiative, he cleaned numerous sections of road and other areas where waste is often dumped. In approximately two months, he collected fifty-two bags of waste. The collected bags are usually placed in a visible location where they can be collected by the relevant authorities. They remain there for two to three days. If they are not collected, Nejc takes care of it himself.
The location for cleaning is chosen based on his own assessment or on suggestions from locals. He mostly undertakes the litter picking himself, but occasionally someone joins him in this task.
For these purposes, he commissioned the production of stickers that he affixes to the refuse sacks. He does this for a simple reason: so it is known which action belongs to which sack, and for awareness-raising. The result of this is positive changes, as people are more willing to participate in keeping the environment clean as a result.
The public recognised Nejc as a responsible villager, which is why an interview with him was also published in the municipal newsletter, "Krajevne novice" of the Šmartno municipality.
Cleaning up our environment is not just about organised action, but the responsibility of each and every one of us.
