Well, our family does it very well. At the beginning of April 2025, my father was diagnosed with a brain tumour. That's when everything else became irrelevant in a second. The family dynamic changed completely - we subordinated our daily life to my father's examinations, hospital treatments and recovery.
Fear and helplessness have become our constant companions. But even though we were going through a very difficult time, we were never completely alone. Many people came to our aid with words of support and comfort, but the greatest support came from Silva Podgrajšek, a nurse at the Maribor hospital and a man with a big heart.
Silva comes from the same village in Pohorje as my mother, so we have known each other for a long time. She has been kind enough to help us with advice or words of encouragement many times in the past, but this time her presence meant even more to us. In moments of uncertainty, she helped us to understand what to expect, what the usual procedures are and how best to take care of our father. With her knowledge, calmness and warmth, she was able to calm our worries even when her working hours were over.
Her willingness to keep us informed about my father's condition and to be a moral support when it was most difficult was particularly invaluable. Because the recovery from the operation is difficult and because my father also needed special care due to the post-operative stitches, Silva came to our home several times in her free time and dressed his wounds professionally and with great sensitivity. She always visited us with a smile, often bringing some home-made delicacies or eggs, and each time we thought how we could thank her, at least in part, for all her help.
In conclusion, I can only say that the saying you meet a friend in an accident is very true in our case. And we can say with certainty that we have the right people around us. Silva is proof that there are individuals who live their commitment to their profession outside the hospital walls - in a human, warm and selfless way.
